Abstract (PubMed)
The panel conducted a meta-analysis of 11 randomized trials finding a 20% relative risk reduction in breast cancer mortality (RR 0.80, 95% CI 0.73-0.89). Overdiagnosis estimates were 11% (95% CI 9-12) long-term and 19% (15-23) during active screening. Per 10,000 UK women aged 50 invited for 20 years: 43 deaths prevented versus 129 overdiagnosed cases. Screening reduces breast cancer mortality but some overdiagnosis occurs.
